How to use AI for Free Career Advice
Eventually, AI will take my job, but I’ve checked: for now, it cannot help you in a comprehensive manner, in part, because it has no pro-active agency and doesn’t know all the factors that should be considered. The complexity is also beyond its capabilities for the moment, but probably not for long. You can still rely on your own intelligence and use my written guide to let AI help you get useful, actionable career advice for free.
1. Please fill in the questionnaire carefully.
If you have any difficulties downloading the file, please drop me an e-mail and I will send it to you.
2. Update your resume/CV or create a summary on your work experiences and qualifications. (This can be in a document or simply text to be copy-pasted.)
3. Write a summary on what are particular about your job preferences, skills, capabilities and limitations. These are the topics to consider:

2. Update your resume/CV or create a summary on your work experiences and qualifications. (This can be in a document or simply text to be copy-pasted.)
3. Write a summary on what are particular about your job preferences, skills, capabilities and limitations. These are the topics to consider:
- If you are planning on moving or where you are planning to live
- How much you are willing to commute
- Health limitations and whether the job can be demanding physically
- If anything limits your availability to work
- What sort of people you can and want to work with
- If you are more comfortable with/used to urban environments or smaller towns
- Job seeking difficulties
- Financial limitations, especially regarding studies
- Personal medium and long-term plans and goals
- Personal connections you might be able to capitalize on
- Hobbies that might be relevant
- Perks that are valuable to you
- Your work-life balance expectations and how flexible you can be for work: part time or full time, willingness to work overtime, times of the day available, your need for flexible working hours
- What your thoughts are about your career options and what your plans are at the moment
4. Feed the documents and your additional summary to the best AI Large Language Model you have access to and explain your request: "Use all the information, documents and the filled-in personality test I give you to give me a list of 20 career options that are best suited to me. Be creative and specific about the career choices. Make sure they are all future proof."
5. Follow this up by picking the most intriguing options, evaluate if the LLM has made any mistakes and ask more questions:
- "What's the best route for me to become a ...?"
- "Do many people that try to become a ... fail? If so, why?"
- "Give me a detailed description of the work of a ..."
- "What is it like to be a ...? What are the everyday tasks and challenges? Does it tend to give a good level of job satisfaction or do many people leave this line of work?"
- ... ↓
- "What do you think I might struggle with working as a ...?"
- "Where should I do my studies to become a ... in ... (city/country)?"
- "How can I meet people working as a ..., so that I can ask them about their experience?"
This process is harder, longer, AI still has its limitations and makes mistakes too; but if you are sharp, the results should be very useful! Make sure to verify the results though. It’s good to keep in mind that using AI does have two significant limitations: 1. No intuition. 2. For now, it won't be able to tell you what you can improve on that give you access to potentially even better career paths, due to complexity.
For the majority of people, there are career options out there that they will truly enjoy, they are just often not that easy to find without help!
